Whilst posting about creating these images on Twitter I have been asked how I made them, so this is an article explaining how to create generative artworks with PHP.

So far IРІР‚в„ўve produced 2 series of artworks РІР‚вЂњ one a set of avatars, and one a set of isometric pixel cities РІР‚вЂњ and they are listed on OpenSea (if youРІР‚в„ўre interested in NFTРІР‚в„ўs). Some of these artworks are amazing, but I much prefer making things inspired by games and movies since those are the sorts of things I enjoy the most.Р”Р„s such, the works IРІР‚в„ўve made are pixel art inspired by retro games. Often generative art is based upon drawing lines or patterns using algorithms, but this isnРІР‚в„ўt the sort of art I like. If it wasnРІР‚в„ўt for saving images I would probably use JavaScript since that will allow me to add controls for dynamically editing images in real time РІР‚вЂњ but this would make saving images a lot more difficult. I chose PHP firstly because I know it pretty well so can work quickly, and secondly (and most importantly) because I can use it to save images to the harddisk. PHP is not a common language for generative art, JavaScript is one of the more common options, but really you can use any programming language that can create images and files. Generative art has a few different names, Procedural art and creative coding are common alternatives. Generative Art is creating artworks through programming. Why should my brush lie to you just because my eye lies to me?РІР‚Сњ Just like with cubism, although these pre-Renaissance paintings look РІР‚СљunrealisticРІР‚Сњ to a present-day viewer, in some ways theyРІР‚в„ўre actually more fully realistic than photographic representations.

If I know a pond is round then why should I draw it oval? I will draw it round because round is true. But as the Bursar thinks in TerryРІР‚в„ўs PratchettРІР‚в„ўs The Last Continent, modern perspective РІР‚Сљis a lie. Before Brunelleschi in the 14th and 15th centuries, for example, a circular pond might be shown on a painting as a perfect circle rather than as a flattened ellipse as it would appear if you looked at it in the landscape or if you photographed it. ItРІР‚в„ўs a similar line of argument as you could use to defend the unrealistic, flattened depictions of space that dominated art before the development of linear perspective in the early Renaissance.
